Egyptian Olympiad in Informatics

The Egyptian Olympiad in Informatics was the first contest I ever entered, at thirteen. I placed 51st in the country.

It set the pattern everything after it followed: a problem, a time limit, and a scoreboard that does not care how you feel about it.

Three seasons of robotics, before I wrote a line of web code. Tenth in Egypt in 2016, and a national final by 2018.

Robots teach a lesson software rarely does this early: the thing has to work on the day, on the floor, with the batteries you actually have.

I joined the Nile University ICPC community as a first-year with no idea what a segment tree was, and left it teaching them. Problem-solving sessions from level 0 to level 2, 300+ students over three years, several of whom went on to qualify for the ECPC finals.

Teaching an algorithm to a room is the fastest way to find out whether you understand it.

Biomedical Informatics · 3.78

A BSc in computer science with a biomedical informatics major, graduating with a 3.78 CGPA. The core was ordinary computer science — data structures, algorithms, databases, networks, operating systems, architecture, security — with a clinical-data spine bolted on: health information standards, medical imaging, machine learning and computer vision.

It is the reason a hospital data format and a Postgres index feel like the same kind of problem to me.

The Egyptian Collegiate Programming Contest, once a year, three years running. We climbed every time: 7th at Nile University in my first year, 5th in my second, 3rd in my third, which qualified us for the ECPC finals.

Team Mad minmax. Five hours, one keyboard, and a problem set that punishes anyone who starts coding before they finish reading.

The year I learned what a byte costs when you have to fit it in a microcontroller and push it over a flaky radio.

Java → .NET 8 → React

A timetable generator for Nile University students, live since 2023 and rewritten twice: a Java prototype, then a .NET 8 API, then a React front end. It reads the live course catalogue, takes your constraints, and searches for schedules that satisfy them.

It also answers the question every student on campus actually has: which room is empty right now.

Digital Egypt Pioneers

The .NET full stack track of the Digital Egypt Pioneers Initiative, a government-backed programme, taken in parallel with the last year of the degree.

It formalised what Scheds had already taught me the hard way about ASP.NET and Entity Framework.

The Undergraduate Research Forum, twice. At the 17th edition we entered two projects and both placed second: PregTracker, a personalised pregnancy tracker, in the software engineering track, and Recover360, a physiotherapy clinic management system, in clinical informatics.

At the 19th edition we took first place for enhancing the readability of faded text in historical documents using image processing.

In an ICPC-style contest, every solved problem earns the team a coloured balloon, and somebody has to run it to their desk. This tracks those requests in real time: who solved what, which balloon is owed, which volunteer is carrying it.

Built for the Nile University contest where I was running the IT side, so it was tested the only way that counts — on the day, under load, with judges waiting.

Second place at the Nile University Innovation Competition, hosted by NilePreneurs and the NU E-Club.

A different scoreboard from a programming contest: you pitch the idea, the market and the plan, not just the solution.

Cofounder of the Nile University Competitive Programming Assembly, and head of its IT and cheating-control committee. That meant the judge servers, the contest machines, the balloon system, and the rules that keep a scoreboard worth believing.

Infrastructure for an event has one property ordinary software does not: there is no maintenance window. It works between 10am and 3pm on one Saturday, or it does not work at all.

A managed manufacturing platform: customers upload a part, the system quotes it, and the job is routed through real workshops. A Django core, a Next.js front end, Celery for the long work, and an OpenCascade microservice that reads the CAD geometry.

Designed, built and deployed end to end, and running in production in Egypt.

numdle · crossing-words

Two small things built for the pleasure of the algorithm. numdle is a daily number game. crossing-words generates crosswords by weighted greedy placement — score every candidate slot, take the best, backtrack when the grid paints itself into a corner.
